Twinkle Twinkle little star’ How I wonder, how relevant poems are!

Some of you may recall a recent poll that I conducted where I tried to understand the reading preferences of my friends. One simple question was asked: What would you prefer to read: Stories or Poems? Just in case you have not participated in that survey, ask yourself now – what would you prefer: Stories or Poems? Did you say ‘stories’? Now, take a guess what would have been the choice of majority of those who took the survey? Come on…guess…Stories or Poems? Here is what I found: the responses were overwhelmingly high in favor of Stories. But why? Has Poetry lost its relevance? Is Poetry no more enjoyable? Can something be done to give them the place they deserve? These thoughts inspired me to write and do my bit in the form of a series of posts – this one, being the first.

Through these posts I do hope to inspire tolerance, acceptance, appreciation, love – in that order, depending upon where you stand in your relationship with poetry. Who knows there is a poet in you waiting for this little nudge to break free! 

I will share with you the soothing power of poetry as it washes over our soul.

Do join me on this poetic journey

that connects with our heart

that resonates with our soul

that evokes forgotten memories

that provokes hopes and dreams.

Do join me as I share with you
poems that bring a nostalgic smile

or some reckless tears

or perhaps a delightful high,

Or yet another random sigh!

After all, poems are spoken words dancing on the page!

And what do you expect when you give your heart a pen?

There are chapters in every life which are seldom read. Let Poetry not be that chapter.

I still wonder what you are;

But for sure, I will figure out what you are…

PS – JLT:

Zindagi…tere nakhron se behtar to kitabein thi

der se hi sahi…samajh toh aati thi

Here is the best I could do to translate the above lines into English.

(Oh life…better than your tantrums

were those books,

which I may have been late to understand…

And never breathe a word about your gains;

but I did understand it later)
